Call It On Yourself

Bobby Jones

The integrity of the upright guides them, but the unfaithful are destroyed by their duplicity.

Proverbs 11:3

The Story

Bobby Jones, the greatest amateur golfer in history, once called a penalty on himself in the 1925 U.S. Open when his ball moved slightly. No one else saw it. The penalty cost him the championship. When praised, he said you might as well praise a man for not robbing a bank. He retired at 28 having won the Grand Slam.

The Bridge

Jones lost a major title because he told the truth no one could have caught. He did not see it as heroic. He saw it as the bare minimum of being a man. Integrity is who you are when the rules cannot reach you. The world will praise you for honesty as if it were rare. To a lion it is just the floor. Call it on yourself.

The Charge

Confess one small thing today that you could easily have hidden.

The Prayer

Lord, make me upright when no one is watching. Let my integrity guide me even when it costs me.
